St Brendans College Killarney

The Climbing Wall was constructed in a covered handball alley by members of Killarney Mountaineering Club and Kerry Mountain Rescue Team with the goodwill of the Bishop and St. Brendan’s management around 1993. It was used initially to maintain summer levels of fitness.

It has developed into a fun and sport climbing discipline enjoyed by many local schools and of course our own Sem boys. The Wall and the climbing routes have evolved to cater for 1st years through to Leaving Cert students with various grades to suit all abilities.

Students are introduced to climbing through PE classes and there are a number of programmes throughout the year where they learn various skills of ropework, safe practices and teamwork and develop basic to advanced climbing techniques if they wish.

While this is all voluntary, the PE teachers and our on-site Rock-Climbing Instructor Donie Mulcahy will help you achieve your goals while ensuring your safety.

On Wednesday afternoons between 1.00 – 3.00 pm, an open session allows climbers to train to competition level.

In 2022, we won the Munster Schools Climbing Team Competition in Cork in the 1st year to 3rd year category.  Four of our 1st years went on and achieved 3rd place in the All-Ireland Final that year.
