St Brendans College Killarney

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

In entering this site I invite you to voyage through a snapshot of the educational opportunities that await your son on enrolment.  It is our hope that you will get a sense of the atmosphere, the welcome and the experiences that await our students as they journey through second level with us.

St. Brendan’s College has an energetic, expert staff, focused on the provision of a holistic education for all of our students.  We enjoy a rich educational heritage, we are housed in an exceptional building, excellently formatted to ensure progressive facilities for a 21st century education.  Under the Major Capital Works Programme, we are now planning a €20 million re imagination of these buildings.

We offer a broad curriculum, beginning with a first year taster programme, the Junior Certificate and a breadth of Senior Cycle programmes including Transition Year, Traditional Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme and Leaving Certificate Applied – testament to the commitment of the College to meet the education needs of all.  At St. Brendan’s our students remain at the centre of all that we do.

With a proud tradition of extracurricular opportunity in Music, Athletics, Debating, Basketball, Arts and cultural activities, Choir, Soccer, Quizzes and most significantly Gaelic Football, and with a growing engagement in Social Justice and Community activities, Outdoor Pursuits, Swimming, Rowing, Golf, Pitch ‘n Putt, Art and Orienteering,  St. Brendan’s provides a broad co-curriculum which serves to enhance your son’s development.

Our vibrant Religious Education, Special Education Needs, Pastoral Care and Career Guidance Departments offer your son an education rich in spirituality, support and direction, preparing your son to become a happy, confident self-directed young man capable of participating fully in life.

Our staff, mindful of developing the whole student, offer a multitude of extra activities for our students.  As Principal for the past 12 years, I have seen how the extracurricular programme builds positive relationships and allows for student growth.  I am very grateful to the staff for their commitment to our students.

As a school we are extremely mindful of the importance of the transition from primary to secondary school.  Towards that end we have developed a series of activities throughout your son’s sixth class which will involve activities in St. Brendan’s College designed to familiarise him with the school buildings, the new subjects, and methods to process the anxieties associated with the transfer to second level. You will also get an opportunity to begin to build relationships with teaching and support staff.

I hope the website will help you to gain an insight into life at St. Brendan’s, beginning a relationship with the school which culminates in your son’s graduation in six years time as a well-balanced, self-aware, well-educated young man.

Now as we recover from the Covid Pandemic, we have restored the variety of activities, we have resumed our teacher based classroom system and we are looking forward to returning to the old normal of school life at St. Brendan’s.

If I can be of any assistance to you at any time, please do not hesitate in contacting me through the school office.

Sincerely,

Sean Coffey

Principal
